The South of the Border is a seemingly old, worn-out piece of land. However, it offers a fantastic experience. There’s vibrant life here with highways, shops, eateries… all like a miniature old world.
Latest 2024 South of the Border Travel Review
From what I’ve researched, South of the Border opened in 1949 as a beer stand by Mr. Alan Schafer.
I’ve noticed there are many highways here, such as I-95, US 301, and US 501.
Today, South of the Border tourism has flourished. There are small shops for drivers, stores selling goods imported from Mexico, motels, souvenir shops, fireworks, drugstores, a post office, and many other entertainment spots.
During the trip, I was impressed by the wide 350-acre attraction called Pedro. This image you can easily spot in the old-fashioned grounds, on highway signs.
I was awestruck by a towering 104-foot Pedro figure tasked with welcoming visitors here.
If you’re fond of fireworks, you can find them anywhere when touring South of the Border. However, if you’re residing in the state, the sale of fireworks is regulated. That’s the law here.
I took numerous photos during my visit t
o this intriguing land. I climbed some sculptures; they looked beautiful.
Touring South of the Border, you can’t miss camping at Pedro’s Campground. You can shower, do laundry, barbecue, and have regular electricity usage.
Then, we had a delicious and reasonably priced meal. It was sirloin steak at The Peddler Steakhouse – one of the restaurants resembling a wide-brimmed hat.
Afterward, we experienced the 200-foot glass elevator of the Sombrero Tower. Here, you can behold the completely mysterious beauty of the South of the Border.
What to Eat When Touring South of the Border?
When touring South of the Border, you can consider the following restaurants:
- Sombrero Restaurant – This building is named after the design of the building itself. It resembles a wide-brimmed hat. I found this restaurant quite cozy; you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner here.
- Pedros Hot Tamale Restaurant – If you prefer fast food when touring the South of the Border, don’t miss this restaurant. Here you can enjoy items like sandwiches, tacos, chicken… these are very famous items at Pedro.
- And if you’re into traditional steak dinners, don’t forget to visit the Peddler Steak House. Here, you can have ribeye, seafood, salad, chicken breast… I like this restaurant because it has a classic vibe. However, it only serves dinner.
Moreover, when touring South of the Border, if you want to cool off, you can visit Pedro’s Ice Cream Fiesta. Here, there’s a variety of dishes suitable for every family member.
What Places to Visit When Touring South of the Border?
When touring South of the Border, remember to visit these places:
- Reptile Lagoon – This is quite an interesting area when touring the South. Here, there’s an exhibition of reptiles, rated the largest in America. There are American alligators, turtles, and a collection of snakes.
- Pedro Land Park – If you’re touring the South of the Border with accompanying children, remember this park. Here, there are many games, carousels, bumper cars. Additionally, there’s an 18-hole golf course for adults.
- Sombrero Tower – This tower is 200 feet tall, with a wide-brimmed hat on top. You can take the elevator up here to enjoy the view. It’s cheap, only $2 per ride. I find this a fantastic place; you can admire the entire city.
Where to Stay When Touring South of the Border?
When visiting the South of the Border, you can choose the following places to stay:
- South of the Border Motor Inn Hotel. This hotel has been renovated, refurbished, and now looks beautiful.
There are standard rooms, standard to King rooms with 2 beds for you to choose from. Additionally, this hotel has an outdoor swimming pool. There’s also an indoor pool.
